European Alternatives. In the wake of Trump Europe has strengthened its quest for digital sovereignty and getting away from its US big tech dependence. For years, Europeans have neglected European services of which many have gone out of business. But they are still there, and we should use them. Hear why and which and how to do it.

  • Presentation by Brian Malika, Founder, One More Percent

Big tech companies are in a race to offset their carbon emissions through acquiring large tracts of land and planting trees that will earn them carbon credits. The challenge is that these big tech companies are buying land from rural, indigenous, and even poorer communities, and there have been rising complaints, protests, and resentment from affected communities that there was no proper engagement and legal representation in these deals. Even though, as activists, we agree that planting trees is a good way to offset carbon emissions and global warming from tech activities like the running of data centers, it is vitally important that local communities are represented and properly engaged before their ancestral or communal land is used. Alongside other activists and movement builders, I have been part of an engagement with Am with the Maasai community in Kenya, and recently we did a protest against META and Netflix that have purchased 4.7 million acres of land and planted trees for carbon credits without duly agreeing with the local community on what benefits they'll get from the same, considering this huge piece of land is used by the Maasai to rear their cattle as a primary way of earning an income.
