Two workshops led by
- Eduardo Mercovich, MyData Global, board of directors (9:30-11:00)
We do know that real personal data empowerment is crucial for our common future. However, most of the people who understand this doesn't have the knowledge or means to implement working solutions. And even if we could, maybe that is not ideal (do we need an email server per person? No...). So if we humans -as any complex systems- thrive in relationships and sharing information is vital for those relationships, what if the implementation for personal data empowerment comes from the community level? What if any community could provide infrastructure for it's members in a similar way to what MyData calls "operators"? And then, just as in the rest of our life, based on real interactions and history each community may earn (or not) the trust of others? In this hands on workshop we will see some real world working examples of this pattern in other domains and then collectively see what can we learn from them, envision how could they be, explore their challenges (such as governance, protocols and implementations, interoperability, data migration, sharing, control, community business models, etc.) and strengths to finally do a rough design of how could they scale from every community up to every person connected to the net. The design will be informed by an biological point of view from the facilitation. In this workshop We may find people aligned with this vision, start the path to make it real and -if we want to- this can be the start of a long and fruitful collaboration. :)
- Hjalte Betak, PhD student, Kooperationen & Roskilde University: Techno-Social Imaginaries: Towards Data Democracy in Platform Knowledge Work (11:30-13:00)
This session explores complementary strategies of individual and collective approaches to data democracy through the specific case of data cooperativism in knowledge-based platform labor.
Industrial Ph.d. student Hjalte Betak will give a short presentation of the data collective proposal linked to his work: an action-research, multi-stakeholder exploration about potentials of platform cooperative organizing of knowledge workers in Denmark. Furthermore, he will introduce concepts and examples of data democracy related to platform labor by covering various, but complementary strategies of data governance.
Collectively, we will inquire which types of data are of critical importance in relation to freelance platform knowledge work throughout platform processes of matching, negotiating and executing.
Furthermore, our group will discuss potential benefits, barriers, and technical application of complementary collectively and individually oriented data governance strategies in the specific case of knowledge-based platform labor.
Finally, our group will explore how these imagined data futures potentially interoperate with data sovereign intermediary models at European level such as Data Spaces, 2-grade Data Cooperatives, Data Unions or Data Markets.
This workshop is an pre-event of the MyData 2025 conference and it is open to all conference ticket holders without separate registration. Others interested in this workshop may register for a spot here.
