From Digital Identity to Role-Based Agency: Moving away from Static Credentials toward Role-Centric Authorizations.
Abstract: As digital ecosystems mature, the prevailing model of Digital Identity—anchored in static, person-centric credentials—has revealed its limitations. Identity alone cannot adequately address the privacy, adaptability, and accountability challenges of decentralised, consent-driven systems. This talk introduces Role-Based Agency (RBA) as an evolution of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), shifting the emphasis from who you are to what role you are authorised to act in. By extending the principles of SSI into role-centric authorisations, RBA offers a practical framework for protecting privacy, reducing overexposure of personal data, and enabling dynamic participation in agentic economies. Drawing on the architecture of the emerging Dynamic Data Economy (DDE), the presentation outlines how role cards, backed by legitimate authorities, can operationalise sovereignty, trust, and accountability in digital interactions. Key Takeaways: - Why person-centric credentials, even under SSI, are insufficient in decentralised ecosystems - How Role-Based Agency (RBA) evolves SSI through role-centric authorisations - The function of role cards and legitimate authorities in enabling trustworthy digital agency - Practical applications in governance, consent management, and ethical data use Target Audience: - Developers, data architects, and privacy engineers - Policymakers and legal experts shaping dynamic consent and accountability frameworks - Builders of decentralised data ecosystems, digital wallets, and agentic platforms Speaker: Paul Knowles, Chief Product Officer, Secours.ai
